The city of Rhodes

The city of Rhodes is the capital of the island of Rhodes in the Dodecanese Islands, consisting of the new town and the medieval city, which brings many tourists every year. Known for the "Colossus of Rhodes, the city of Rhodes carries a long and special history. It is founded in 408 BC at the northernmost tip of the island. Important period for the city began in 1309 when the city was conquered by the Knights of St. John. For nearly 2 centuries, Rhodes was the administrative and political center of the Knight rule. In 1522 the city passed to the Turks, followed by a period of Italian occupation (1912-1948) and in 1948 the island of Rhodes has been incorporated in the Greek state.
