Samothrace with its ellipsoid form is found in the N.E. Aegean and it is known from the antiquity as the “Holy Island” because here was taken place the Kaviria Mysteries, mysteries rivalling to the Eleusinian Mysteries. It abstains from Alexandroupolis 22 naval miles and its name possibly it emanates from the aspect of its mountainous volume. The prehellenic word samos means height and Samothraki is the high Thrace.
